CBC or Competency Based Curriculum under the 2-6-3-3 structure is the new educational system in Kenya that is set to replace the 8-4-4 system which has served Kenya for 32 years. Here, learning will be based on the needs and potential of individual learners under a pliable structure and factors that shift with the learners demands.
This system was first introduced in Kenya in 2017 after being researched and developed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) whereby they ensured that there was a change of emphasis from the tradition of chalk-and-talk teaching. Instead, they focused more on the students ensuring that they learn in groups and not just memorize facts, but develop competencies and understand core values and important issues.
The Structure
From the flowchart above, every learner will transition through 17 levels, each level consisting of at least one year. The system will comprise the following:-i) 2 years of pre-primary education
ii) 6 years of primary education
iii) 3 years of junior secondary education
iv) 3 years of senior secondary education
v) 3 years of university education
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development further grouped these levels into four general categories:-
a) Early years of education
b) Middle school
c) Senior school

Conclusion
As we conclude it's important to know that subjects will be called learning areas, topics will be referred to as strands and sub-topics will be known as sub-strands. Also, rather than taking a one-time examination like KCPE or KCSE which encompassed a lot of cramming, leaners will be engaged in Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs).
Teaching and learning will be integrated with the digital literacy principals i.e. Comprehension, interdependence, social factors and curation.
