Workplace hazards

A workplace hazard is anything with the potential to cause harm, injury, illness, or property damage in the work environment. They are typically categorized into six primary types: 1. Safety Hazards These are the most common workplace risks and involve conditions that can cause injuries, spills, or trips. Examples: Slips, trips, and falls (wet floors, trailing cords, uneven surfaces), working from heights, unguarded machinery, and electrical faults. 2. Biological Hazards These involve living organisms or materials produced by them that pose a threat to human health. Examples: Fungi, mold, bacteria, viruses, blood and other body fluids, insect bites, and animal droppings. 3. Noise Exposure

Noise Exposure   Exposure to hazardous noise at the workplace or at home can lead to permanent hearing loss or Tinnitus (ringing in the ear).  This damage can result from short exposure to loud noises, or prolonged exposure to lower levels of noise.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 22 million workers around the world are exposed to potentially damaging noise at work each year.  Here at Kenya railways I'm sure we're part of this statistic because our locomotives produce a lot of noise especially when they are being load tested. Some of our cranes also produce potentially damaging noise. (Front shop crane-) Whether you work in a workshop, sports venue, an entertainment establishment, or operate a jackhammer—hearing loss is preventable. Damage to hearing can occur if we are typically exposed to noise levels above 85 decibels over a period of 8 hours, or one-off burst of noise of 140 decibels or more.   Typical decibels ratings for some comm...

Respiratory Problems

Workplace respiratory diseases  Respiratory diseases are conditions affecting the lungs, airways, and breathing tissues, causing symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing.  Respiration   can be impaired in various ways: 1. The airways may be blocked  2. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs may be affected by inhalation of smoke or fumes 3. The function of the lungs may be impaired by chest injury  4. Breathing mechanism may be affected by conditions such as asthma  An average man's lungs can hold approximately 6 liters (10 pints) of air; a woman's lung can hold 4 liters(7pints) of air. When lungs cannot hold the required amount of air—the body struggles to maintain the necessary oxygen levels and remove carbon dioxide.  This leads to severe breathing difficulties and potential organ damage due to insufficient oxygen supply.  THE CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS  1. Airway obstructio...

principles of kaizen

The principles of kaizen  Kaizen is a Japanese word which means continuous improvement or development. It tells us that we can always improve ourselves. Whether it's learning something new or perfecting a skill you already have, there is always a room for improvement in everyone's life.   Let's see how each principle can be applied to one's personal life. 1. Never stop No matter how successful you are in your life or career, there is still an area for advancement and refinement in your life. e.g. Maybe you have a good job, car, house, etc but that is not enough- keep pressing on to achieve more. 2. Eliminate former habits Let go of former habits, even if they seemed to have some benefit to you at that particular time. For example you have been using analogue record keeping like paper work: You should digitize workflows to eliminate slow, manual tasks and paper clutter.  As time progresses, you should also make an effort to progress.(Move with technology  3. Be proact...
