Wetangula Reclaims Ford-Kenya Party Leadership After a Gazette Notice Was Recalled
Embattled Ford-Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula has heaved a sigh of relief after the registrar of political parties Anne Nderitu recalled a gazette notice that she had earlier on issued declaring the member of parliament for Kanduyi constituency Wafula Wamunyinyi as the new Ford-Kenya party leader. This comes after the Bungoma senator had withdrawn his petition before the Political Parties and Dispute Tribunal. On Friday June 12, Wetangula's lawyers led by Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi said that because the gazette notice was withdrawn, Wetangula remains the party leader of Ford-Kenya. "The registrar of political parties has recalled the 8th June notice on the changes made to the Ford-Kenya party and as far as we are concerned, Moses Wetangula is still the Ford-Kenya party leader," Havi said.
All these now gives the former minority leader in the senate a reprieve from melancholy people and warring members who have given him sleepless nights over the last few weeks, and who were claiming that they wanted to align the party ahead of the 2022 elections.
However, Wetangula pleaded to his supporters to disregard this 'illegal ouster' which was carried out intentionally through mutiny and cowardice acts by his political opponents. "Don't panic, coups are archaic to good order and are activities of cowards. Anybody who wants to run for a seat in Ford-Kenya file your papers and let's meet at Bomas. I have no doubt that delegates will still give me a chance to run this party," He said.
In the petition filed by his team, Wetangula reiterated that the 14 signatures collected for his ouster were forged by imposters who were not bona fide members of the party's National Executive Council. When withdrawing the petition from Political Parties and Dispute Tribunal, he however said that he was no longer interested in pursuing the application seeking to bar Wamunyinyi from taking Ford-Kenya party leadership.
Now the party is laying down plans on how to discipline the party members who planned the coup and has demanded apology letters from the members or else they will face a disciplinary committee which will be chaired by member of parliament for West Mugirango Vincent Kemosi, who is expected to listen to the submissions of Wamunyinyi, Secretary General Eseli Simiyu and Cynthia Mutere, the party's women league chairperson and make a final decision there after.
